By coming together around a shared belief in the potential of young people, we open doors for remarkable Scholars to broaden their horizons, pursue their aspirations, and discover how they can make a difference in the world.

That belief comes to life in the stories throughout this Impact Report. Our partnership with the Kazickas Family Foundation in Lithuania is one example of many around the world that help us identify remarkable young Scholars and give them the opportunity to realize their potential. As one Lithuanian Scholar beautifully described her ASSIST experience: “Dream to the moon, and even if you achieve a fraction of it, it will be a lot.… Now, I am living this dream. And my hands are just an inch from touching the moon.”

Opening the door is only the beginning. Our member schools across the United States provide the communities where Scholars are challenged, supported, and inspired to grow in ways they may never have imagined. Our 40-year partnership with Wyoming Seminary is a powerful example of the enduring relationships that make the ASSIST experience possible.

And the impact continues long after the ASSIST year ends. Across Lithuania and our other partner countries, alumni like Olivia Jacobsson return home prepared to contribute as diplomats, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, artists, and leaders in public service and civil society.

None of this happens without you. Our donors are essential partners in this work, providing the resources that turn potential into opportunity and opportunity into lasting impact.

Thank you for believing in our Scholars, for sharing in our mission, and for being our partner in creating a more connected and peaceful world.

Sincerely,

-J. Martin Milne, President

 Message from the Board Chair

ASSIST Year Spans a Scholar’s Lifetime

Dear ASSIST Partners, Families, and Friends,

I was fortunate to have been introduced to ASSIST Scholars in 2015, when my family hosted a remarkable Scholar from Barcelona, Spain. This talented, bright, engaging young woman enriched our lives in countless ways, and we still consider her a beloved sister and daughter.

Through her, I saw firsthand how a single year of study abroad can expand a young person’s perspective, build their confidence, and shape how they lead, connect, and engage with the world for years to come. ASSIST scholars are uniquely prepared to stretch their boundaries, try new activities, and embrace individuals whose stories differ from their own.

Most remarkable is that an ASSIST Year spans a Scholar’s lifetime! Beginning on the day they are accepted into the program, ASSIST Scholars become part of a global family of more than 6,500 alumni from 66 countries. Alumni of all ages mentor new Scholars, interview candidates, support Orientation, and open doors for one another as they become leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists, engineers, and ambassadors. Wherever they go in the world, ASSIST alumni know they are never far from one another. We believe this powerful, lifelong network of leaders can influence and inspire a more peaceful, collaborative world.

In this year’s Impact Report, you’ll hear directly from Scholars whose lives have been forever transformed by your trust, partnership, and generosity. On behalf of the passionate and dedicated Board of Directors, thank you for believing in our mission and our scholars. Together, we will continue to find and invest in these talented, future leaders for generations to come.

With appreciation,

-Pam Haering Freer, ASSIST Board Chair

 Year in Review and Events

 A Global Class,
A Growing Community

The Class of 2027 brings together 174 Scholars from a record 31 countries and 37 citizenships, the broadest representation in ASSIST’s 57-year history, topping last year’s program best. This year also marks an important milestone: Scholars from Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, and Greece are joining the ASSIST community for the first time.

Across 85 U.S. member schools, these students will bring new perspectives, experiences, and cultures into classrooms and communities – supported by $10 million in scholarship awards contributed by ASSIST member schools. Across generations, many alumni and supporters have remained deeply engaged – mentoring students, interviewing candidates, and helping create opportunities for those who come next.

In this conversation, three esteemed members of the ASSIST community offer a window into Lithuania’s lasting network. Vaida Abraskeviciute, an ASSIST alumna (class of 2015) and Lithuania Country Coordinator, balances her work with ASSIST alongside a career in technology. Aukse Jurkute, alumna (class of 1993) and former Board member, continues to give back through interviews, alumni engagement, and support of current Scholars. And Joseph Gould, a longtime Board member and interviewer, has spent years building relationships with Lithuanian Scholars and alumni, often staying connected well beyond the selection process.

Together, their reflections reveal a powerful throughline: one ASSIST experience can become something much larger – a relationship, a responsibility, and a commitment to opening doors for the next generation.

Joseph Gould, ASSIST Board of Directors, Vaida Abraškevičiūtė

Watch a video about the experiences of Lithuanian ASSIST Scholars

Watch a video of Joe, Aukse and Vaida describing ASSIST’s impact in Lithuania and their own stories here.

 Alumni Spotlight

 Opening Doors Through Technology

Alumna Olivia Jacobsson’s Path to AI Leadership

From ASSIST Scholar to one of Europe’s rising AI leaders, Olivia Jacobsson has built a career at the intersection of technology, strategy and growth.

An ASSIST alumna from the Class of 2016, Olivia attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. She later studied at Linköping University, earning a bachelor’s degree followed by a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management. Her path to the technology sector crossed several fields, including management consulting, manufacturing, teaching and recruitment. After interning at McKinsey, Olivia joined the Swedish legal-tech startup now known as Legora. While recruiting engineers there, she noticed that several standout competitive programmers had something in common: they worked at Lovable. Her curiosity about the young company eventually led her to connect with cofounder Anton Osika – and opened the door to the next chapter of her career.

Today, Olivia works in strategy and operations at Lovable, the Stockholm-based AI company transforming how software is created. As one of the company’s earliest employees and its second nontechnical team member, she helped build and lead functions spanning operations, finance, strategic partnerships and investor relations. She also designed Lovable’s employee equity program, supported its Series A financing and helped attract talent from more than 15 countries.

At Lovable, Olivia is helping widen access in a new arena. She is part of a team working to make software creation possible for people without conventional technical backgrounds – an effort that echoes ASSIST’s own belief in opening doors so that talent, curiosity, and ambition have room to grow.

In 2026, Forbes named Olivia to its 30 Under 30 Europe list in the AI category. Lovable has grown into one of Europe’s most valuable private technology companies, reaching a $13.3 billion valuation in August. Since first connecting with the program in 1973, the Pennsylvania school has welcomed 148 ASSIST Scholars, the most of any school in ASSIST history.

Wyoming Seminary stands out for pairing academic ambition with a deeply personal, globally minded school experience. Students are encouraged to explore widely across academics, the arts, athletics, and leadership opportunities while becoming thoughtful, engaged members of a diverse community. That emphasis on both individual growth and global citizenship makes Wyoming Seminary a natural partner for ASSIST.

Few people embody the strength of that partnership better than John “Jack” Eidam. A longtime ASSIST Board member and now Director Emeritus, Jack also spent many years as Wyoming Seminary’s Dean of Admission, Financial Aid, and Summer Programs and today serves as the school’s archivist. Across decades of service to both organizations, he has been a steadfast champion of the shared belief that bringing talented young people together across cultures strengthens not only individual students, but entire school communities.

The record 148 Scholars who have called Wyoming Seminary home are a remarkable testament to that shared commitment – and to a partnership that has continued to deepen across generations.

 Alumni Stories

 Where One Year Can Lead

ASSIST alumni reflect on the moments, relationships, and lessons that continued shaping their lives long after their Scholar year ended.

When we asked alumni to reflect on where their ASSIST experiences led them, their answers spanned countries, careers, and decades. Some could trace their path back to a single classroom, teacher, or moment of encouragement. Others described a quieter transformation: becoming more independent, more confident, more willing to take a risk, or more open to perspectives different from their own.

Their paths since ASSIST look very different. But across their stories, a common thread emerges: one formative year expanded their sense of what was possible.

Discovering a Direction:
Chi Nguyen (ASSIST ’19), Jeannie Cao (ASSIST ’07), Dora Kramar (ASSIST ’17)Collapse
For some alumni, the influence of their ASSIST year can be traced remarkably clearly to what came next. When Chi Nguyen (ASSIST ’19), from Vietnam, arrived at The Waterford School in Utah in 2018, science was not yet a particular passion. Then she took Honors Chemistry with Dr. Osipovitch. Before she returned home, he left her with a simple suggestion: give chemistry another good chance.

She did.

“That ‘good chance’ has brought me way further than my 15-year-old self could have ever imagined,” she reflects.

Today, Chi is entering her sixth year in the United States as a PhD student in Chemistry at MIT. Looking back, she credits her ASSIST experience not only with sparking an interest in science, but with teaching her to be comfortable being a beginner – a mindset that continued to shape her exploration as an undergraduate at Vassar College and now as a scientist.

Jeannie Cao (ASSIST ’07) recalls arriving from Hungary for an ASSIST year at The Putney School in Vermont in 2006-07. An anatomy class introduced an entirely different approach to learning: getting outside the classroom, examining animal tracks, and dissecting sheep eyes and pig hearts.

It was unlike anything she had experienced in school before.

The experience helped crystallize an emerging interest in medicine. Today, she is a pediatric heart surgeon.

For Dora Kramar (ASSIST ’17) from Croatia, it was a psychology teacher at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School who left the lasting impression. Her class with Mrs. Holly White helped shape Dora’s university choice and continues to influence the work she does in psychology today.

Different Scholars. Different subjects. He remembers ASSIST teaching him how to adapt to another culture, and understand that the same problem can look very different depending on where you stand.

One of his most enduring lessons happened not in a classroom, but on a stage.

A shy teenager still adjusting to a new country and language, José auditioned for the school production of Grease. Singing and dancing in front of an audience felt like an enormous leap.

Afterward came a realization he still carries with him today: “Stepping outside your comfort zone, even when it’s uncomfortable, is often exactly how you grow.”

José later became a physician, eventually moving into healthcare leadership, quality, and patient safety. His work now takes him across Spain, Colombia, and Germany, where the ability to listen, understand different perspectives, and adapt across cultures remains central to what he does.

For Zuzanna Waleska (ASSIST ’25), from Poland, the change is visible just two years after beginning her ASSIST experience at Santa Catalina School. Before her Scholar year, approaching a stranger, making a phone call, or organizing something could feel intimidating. Today, she sees those moments differently.

Her increased confidence has made her more willing to lead, take initiative, seek out new programs and language courses, and pursue opportunities to study abroad. ASSIST also helped prepare her for the demands of the IB Diploma Programme by strengthening skills like independent research, academic writing, and time management.

“My ASSIST year gave me countless good memories and broadened my horizons,” she reflects, “but its impact did not end when I returned home.”

Carrying It Forward:
Davorka Lulic (ASSIST ’05), İdil Türkmen (ASSIST ’24)Expand
Years later, the impact of ASSIST also shows up in what alumni choose to give back.

Davorka Lulic (ASSIST ’05)] was 16 when she left Croatia to attend Cranbrook Schools in Michigan. She had traveled very little outside her home country and describes herself at the time as shy and hesitant to try new things.

Living abroad changed that.]

The experience pushed her outside her comfort zone, helped her become more independent, and gave her a confidence and openness that stayed with her long after she returned home. Her host family, the Dabrowskis, became an important part of that experience and a source of lasting gratitude.

Today, Davorka is an interventional cardiologist who is also involved in medical education and mentoring. She teaches students and colleagues and supports young people who come to Croatia on exchange – creating for others some of the same sense of welcome and possibility that once mattered so much to her.

“I believe that ASSIST, in a way, determined the path I took,” she says. “My ASSIST year really did change my life.”

For İdil Türkmen (ASSIST ’24), from Turkey, ASSIST changed what she believed she could pursue.

At Loomis Chaffee, challenging courses in mathematics and physics strengthened her conviction that physics was the path she wanted to follow. She went on to study physics at Caltech, where she has become involved in particle-physics research, machine learning, computational physics, and AI, including her recent work on Higgs boson pair production.

The experience also gave her the confidence to keep pursuing ideas beyond the classroom. Her senior project, Vocam – an app designed to help people learn vocabulary from the world around them – continued to evolve after graduation and has since been submitted for Google Play production review.

“ASSIST didn’t just change where I studied next,” she explains. “It made me much more willing to pursue difficult ideas and keep working on them long after the original opportunity ended.”

And sometimes, the most lasting impact is personal.

Nearly two decades after his ASSIST year, José still considers his American host family part of his own. He traveled to California for his host brother’s wedding, and years later, members of that family traveled to Spain to celebrate José’s wedding.

ASSIST, he says, did not simply give him a year abroad. It taught him how to enter another world, understand it, become part of it – and then bring that experience home.

One Year, Still Unfolding

The paths these alumni followed are impressive, but their reflections reveal something more enduring than achievement alone.

They describe learning to approach uncertainty with curiosity. To take themselves seriously enough to pursue an ambitious idea. To listen across cultures. To become comfortable being a beginner. To say yes when something feels unfamiliar. To recognize an opportunity – and then create one for someone else.

Years and even decades after their ASSIST experience, alumni still see traces of that one year in the way they work, lead, learn, connect, and understand the world.

The ASSIST year may end. What it sets in motion can continue for a lifetime.

 ASSIST Board of Directors

Pamela Haering Freer,
Board Chair
Helis Zulijani-Boye,
Vice Chair
Pamela M.
