John L. Heyl
John serves on the ASSIST Campaign Steering and Development and Alumni Relations Committees. His insights into the realms of fundraising and public relations have made him a crucial member of the ASSIST team.
John received his BA from Trinity College in 1966 and spent a year at Brown University, where he was a teaching assistant in anthropology, followed by three years in Maine where he taught emotionally disturbed children in grammar school and high school French. In 1970 he returned to Trinity as director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving. From there he led the development programs at the Harvard Business School and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He returned to Maine as VP for Development and External Affairs at Bowdoin College, followed by development leadership positions in Washington, DC, at the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Conservation International. He returned to New England as VP of WPI in Worcester, MA, for 10 years, leading a major marketing program for the university in addition to running another capital campaign. His last 8 years before retirement were back in DC as Sr. VP for Development at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the world’s premier national security think tank.
John’s formidable resume, years of experience, and passion for his work precede him, and he is a strong ally for ASSIST. John currently lives in Falmouth, MA, and Naples, FL, with his wife, Mary Jo.
