If you&#8217;re seeking academic credit, you must check with your school in your home country and with your Ministry of Education (or your country&#8217;s equivalent) to find out what you&#8217;ll need to do to ensure the credits for classes you take in the USA will transfer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Can I request a placement in a particular school, state, or region?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Choosing your school is not possible through ASSIST. ASSIST staff is experienced in placing students in schools that fit their interest and needs the best so you&#8217;ll have tailored opportunities to be successful. Though you can tell us your preferences, we ask that you trust us to make the best placement possible for you.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\">Can my friends and family visit me during my year abroad?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes! Your friends and family are more than welcome to visit during your exchange year. We strongly recommend, however, that visits take place later in the year (preferably in the spring). This gives you plenty of time to get used to your new school, schedule, and classes and to make new friends.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-3\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-3\">How do I apply for an ASSIST scholarship?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-3\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Beginning each year in July, students can <a href=\"https:\/\/assistscholars.fsenrollment.com\/users\/sign_in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apply directly through ASSIST<\/a>, or can contact their country&#8217;s <a href=\"\/ka\/scholarship\/locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASSIST Program Coordinator.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In some countries there are specific steps and requirements, so it is advisable to talk with your local coordinator before beginning.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-4\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-4\">How does ASSIST select scholars?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-4\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>We base our selections on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic achievements<\/li>\n<li>English proficiency, as measured by a standardized test, a written essay, and an interview<\/li>\n<li>Teacher recommendations<\/li>\n<li>Personal essays<\/li>\n<li>Ability to contribute to a school&#8217;s extracurricular programs<\/li>\n<li>Personality, maturity level, and ability to engage socially<\/li>\n<li>Your willingness to share cultural differences<\/li>\n<li>Your leadership qualities and potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-5\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-5\">What is the timeline for the application and enrollment process?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-5\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>September &#8211; February: Application and Interview Season<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deadlines for submitting applications vary by country. Interviews are scheduled beginning in October and concluding in late February. Please\u00a0<a href=\"\/ka\/scholarship\/locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit our ASSIST in Your Country pages<\/a> for the application instructions within your country.<\/p>\n<strong>January &#8211; March: Scholarship Decisions Released and Enrollment Begins<\/strong><br \/>\nASSIST sends out offers to successful candidates. Students and their parents accept their scholarships and make a deposit to secure their place in the program.\n<strong>March &#8211; May: \u00a0School Placement and Payments<\/strong><br \/>\nSchool placement takes a great deal of time to accomplish successfully and typically happen in March and April, but no later than the end of May. Your final ASSIST program fee payment is due in July. You may pay your program fee at any time before the deadline.\n<strong>March &#8211; July: \u00a0Submit ASSIST Enrollment Forms and Paperwork<\/strong><br \/>\nJuly is the deadline for submitting all information forms, permissions forms and medical forms to\u00a0 ASSIST through the enrollment portal.\n<strong>May-July: \u00a0Pre-Departure Orientation<\/strong><br \/>\nYour Country Coordinator will schedule and notify you of the Pre-Departure Orientation in your country.\n<strong>August: \u00a0ASSIST In-Person Orientation<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Scholars will be required to attend an ASSIST orientation, which includes information sessions to prepare for their year ahead and make connections with other ASSIST scholars.\n<strong>August &#8211; September: \u00a0Start of the School Year<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>ASSIST&#8217;s Member Schools have varying start dates. Scholars will travel to their school between mid-August and early September, depending on their specific school placement.\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-6\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-6\">Will I have the option to stay at my American school for a second year?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-6\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The ASSIST program is designed for one year of study in America, and the schools have committed a scholarship only for only one year.\u00a0 On a case-by-case basis, some ASSIST Scholars have been invited by their school to stay for a second year. Students have only been allowed to stay upon request by the school. Scholars are not permitted to approach the school to request a second year. After completing high school in their home country, many ASSIST Scholars return to the U.S. to earn undergraduate and\/or graduate degrees at prestigious American colleges and universities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-14\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-14\">Will there be additional fees charged by the school?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-14\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes, there are additional fees charged by the school for which you will be responsible.
