Robert H. Mattoon Jr.

Skip’s years of experience in universities and independent schools have given him insight and wisdom to support ASSIST’s progress. Skip serves as the chair of the Governance Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee, where his experience and perspective have been crucial to ASSIST’s growth.

Skip grew up on the campus of Kent School, then was graduated from Deerfield Academy and Dartmouth College. He was graduated from Tulane with an M.A. and from Yale with an M.A. and Ph.D. before going on to teach at the Universities of Michigan and Arizona. At the University of Arizona, Skip served as Associate Director of the Latin American Area Center. He has served as a trustee at the Bement School, Greenfield Country Day School, Deerfield Academy, and The Association of Board Schools (TABS).

Skip was dean of the faculty and associate head of school of Deerfield Academy from 1982-1996 before serving as head of school of Hotchkiss School from 1996-2007. After retiring from Hotchkiss, he served as executive director of the Eight Schools Association and then became the founding co-head and then head of Avenues: The World School in New York City.

Today, Skip lives in Sharon, CT, with his wife, Lyn.
