ASSIST’S School and Scholar Matching Approach

The "Magic in the Match"

For a year this important, the right school match matters.

The best match isn’t always the school you first imagined. It’s the place where you can be known, challenged, and transformed

  • "Before I arrived here at an all-boys school, I thought it would be a very small, isolated school, a weird environment. It couldn't be farther from the truth. When I came here, I realized that the school has a very beautiful campus, that classes are smaller, which makes it easier for you to learn...which really improves how you learn. One thing that I realized, was how strong the bonds you create here can really be...I definitely matured."

  • "Before I came, I thought that living here would be kind of awkward and boring...all those stereotypes. But after living here for a few weeks, I realized that being in an all-girls environment is truly a gift because it gives me opportunities I’ve never had before."

The Right School Match Starts with You

You don’t need to know your perfect school before you get there. That’s our job.

You just need to help us get to know you, and approach the process with an open mind.

Many students start the process with a picture in mind of what their ASSIST year will look like. Before arriving, Scholars sometimes focus on aspects that are easiest to compare: geography, school size, whether a school is coed, or how familiar its name may be.

A year later, they often talk about something very different: the teacher who changed their thinking, the friends who became family, the activity they never expected to try, or the community they never imagined loving.

For 57 years, ASSIST has been learning what makes a Scholar and a school thrive together. We know our partner schools deeply through longstanding relationships, regular conversations, campus visits, and ongoing feedback from school leaders, Scholars, and alumni. Each placement adds to our understanding of a school’s culture, community, strengths, and the students who are most likely to flourish there. Our matching process combines this firsthand knowledge with the time we take to understand each student. The best match may not always look like the one you first imagined. We ask families to remain open to the possibilities and trust the expertise and time-tested process behind each placement.

That is why ASSIST looks beyond name recognition, geography, and the qualities that are easiest to compare. We focus on finding the community where each Scholar can contribute, grow, and make the most of their year abroad.

Some ASSIST programs, including ASSIST Select and Direct Placement, give families greater input into the criteria that guide the school search. Every placement, however, benefits from the same experience, relationships, and matching expertise.

How it works: The Magic Comes From Knowing Both Sides

The more we understand who you are, the better we can identify the school community where you can thrive.

We get to know you.
Through your application, interviews, recommendations, and conversations with ASSIST, you help us learn about your academic strengths, interests, goals, preferences, and what you hope to experience during your year abroad.

We know our schools.
For more than 55 years, ASSIST has built close relationships with our member schools. We know their academics, opportunities, and expectations, as well as the cultures and communities that make each one stand out. By visiting every campus and spending time with the faculty and staff who bring these communities to life, we gain a firsthand understanding of the student experience that goes far beyond what you can learn from a website.

Then we bring the two together.
We look at where your strengths align with a school's opportunities, how you can contribute, and where you have room to grow in ways you might not expect.

The magic isn't luck. It's knowing both sides - and seeing the possibilities between them.

What Goes Into a Match?

A match considers more than what’s on your transcript.

Every Scholar - and ASSIST school community - is different. That’s why our matching process looks at the full picture.

Depending on the student and placement, considerations include:

(list in some kind of visual)

  • Academic strengths, interests, and goals
  • Courses and academic opportunities
  • Extracurricular interests and activities
  • School size and community environment
  • Personality and learning style
  • Opportunities for leadership and contribution
  • The Scholar’s goals for the year
  • School culture, values, and expectations
  • ASSIST’s experience with the school and its community

No single factor determines the match. We consider how these pieces come together to identify a school where a Scholar can be challenged, supported, connected, and able to contribute.

Scholars on Finding the Right Fit

Sometimes the right match becomes clearest once you’re there.

Before their ASSIST year, Scholars may wonder whether a school will feel right, especially if it is different from what they originally imagined.

But once they arrive, they often describe something deeper: finding a supportive community, discovering new interests, building meaningful relationships, growing in confidence, and feeling that they belong.

“I connected with an amazing and supportive community… shared my Georgian culture and history, and participated in varsity swimming for the first time.”

  • Caesar

“ASSIST connected me with one of the best academic institutions in North America. I’ve learned so many new skills, and I’m able to succeed academically, athletically and socially.”

  • Iskra

  • Lucie
