Welcome to ASSIST Hungary

ASSIST Hungary was established to help young Hungarian students currently in the 10th grade who would like to spend one year as exchange students in the United States as 11th graders. There are also some opportunities available for students entering the 10th and 12th grades and as postgraduate students.

Our work in eastern and central Europe began in Hungary in the 1990/91 academic year with the support of the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation. Our first Hungarian scholars distinguished themselves in their American independent schools, and ultimately 189 Hungarian students have studied in the States under our auspices.

Financial Support for Hungarian Scholars

American schools are generous in offering scholarships to ASSIST students. Throughout our time in Hungary, ASSIST has identified sponsors to help students and their families pay for the cost of participating in the program. Hungarian alumni and American donors have joined together to support deserving Scholars.

Virtual Information Sessions

Please email Ms. Andrea Pordan at apordan@assistscholars.org to get your Zoom link for the meeting or to learn about additional upcoming session dates.

How to Apply

To apply for the 25/26 school year, you will log into ASSIST's application portal. The application process for scholarships for the 2025/26 school year will begin in early August, 2024. The application fee is to be paid through the ASSIST application portal.

Once your application has been submitted, you will have access to a checklist listing additional required materials, like teacher recommendations and grade transcripts. We encourage you to check your applicant portal often to see the status of your materials.

If you advance to the Scholarship Finalist Round, you may be asked to take a Duolingo English Test and to interview in-person in Budapest in January.
